Hancock — Superhero movie failing to fly

Published by Delphine at 9:46 pm under Entertainment Edit This

Woah, so Hancock has been getting some really bad reviews so far and it’s not even out in theaters yet! Well, I’ll admit that I had the sincere pleasure of getting to already see this little flick for myself (yay for going on a date with a magazine publisher who had a press pass to the preview showing) and… I liked it! So what if the twist was a little forced and the ending was corny? It was a good movie, Will Smith was a delightful actor, and the special effects were awesome.

Of course, not everyone seems to be sharing my sentiments. I’m seeing two stars out of four, among other very low ratings being the norm (compliments of such sites like fandango and rottentomatoes). Well, then I’ll just be the odd man (woman?) out then.

For those of you who aren’t aware of what Hancock is all about, here’s a synopsis:

“There are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock (Will Smith). With great power comes great responsibility — everyone knows that — everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough — as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn’t the kind of man who cares what other people think — until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock’s greatest challenge yet — and a task that may prove impossible as Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), insists that he’s a lost cause.”

Alright, the opening date on that is July 2nd and while I don’t think it’s worthy of rushing the theater to be the first in line, I do think it’s worth seeing before it goes on DVD. I really liked the action and the humor and there were some enough touching and edge-of-your-seat moments to keep me enthralled.

Then again, I’m easily entertained. Take it for what it’s worth, but that’s my two cents on the upcoming movie Hancock. Sigh. Now if only I could find another magazine publisher to temporarily date in time for the preview showing of The Black Knight…
